Enchanted Woodland Forest Birthday Party

When our client Wui Yi asked us to create a magical forest party for her little girl’s 1st birthday, we were completely overwhelmed and secretly wished to be transported into those mystical wonderlands instantly. There is something inexplicably captivating about the idea of an enchanted forest.

We took the forest indoor and turned it into a whimsical and enchanted fairytale. The cake table was a stunning sight set against a watercolor-printed forest backdrop adorned with lush floral arrangements. The forest was made lively with the presence of the adorable woodland hedgehogs, rabbits, ducks, deer and bird all decked with party hats and flower crowns. We also planted wooden signages, a large Faraway Tree, magic mushrooms, rustic wood stumps and logs, mini topiaries and a plentiful of leafy details to complete our dream wonderland.

The beautiful treats were all carefully selected and each of them had a label card thoughtfully painted with a darling name to match the enchantment spun; these include Faraway Woods (chocolate log cakes), Flower Puff (pink raspberry glazed profiteroles), Acorn (chocolate coated strawberry), Enchanted Tower (macaron tower) and Woodland Pops (marshmallow pops).

This birthday party was nothing short of fun. As soon as the kids entered, they were instantly amused by the friendly furry friends at the petting zoo. The petting zoo was no doubt one of the main highlights. We also created a Scavenger Hunt and a picnic area brimming with colourful mats, balloons, a teepee, rattan baskets filled with toys.”

Invitations

Fairies and elves and magic, oh my! This enchanted forest party theme combines role-playing adventures with magical activities and games to delight little fairies and elves who won’t want to leave the fantastical forest fête!

Whether you choose to purchase party invitations or make your own, the use of a glitter pen is a nice touch to give the appearance of the party details being written in fairy dust. Suggestions for invitations that you can make yourself include:

  • Postcard photo invitations featuring the birthday child in a fairytale-perfect costume
  • Cardstock paper cut into the shape of a leaf, tree, or toadstool
  • Coloring pages that feature enchanted forest creatures such as elves, fairies, or woodland animals
  • Flyer invitations, printed with a Calligraphy-style font and then rolled into scrolls

Attire

Dressing up is half the fun at an enchanted forest party. If you want to go all out, you can supply fairy tutus, flower headbands, and elf hats and shoes for the kids to dress up in. When you send the invites, ask the kids to come in leggings, pastels, florals, as well as green and brown colors.

  • Of course, you don’t have to supply entire ensembles—the elf hats and fairy headbands are more than enough. Kids may come dressed “as is” and still enjoy every aspect of the party.

Decorations

If you can host this party in a backyard or garden, the surrounding greenery and natural elements provide a backdrop that may only need to be enhanced with a few extras. An inside party space, however, can certainly be transformed into a woodland setting when you decorate with items such as tree branches, floral accessories, and artificial greenery (break out those green Christmas garlands!)

Some more ideas for decorating both indoor and outdoor party spaces:

  •  String fairy lights around the party space.
  • Decorate a garden arch with twinkling lights and flowers and place it where guests need to pass beneath to enter the enchanted forest.
  • Use a bubble machine to pump bubbles into the party area or sprinkle guests with confetti (fairy dust) when they arrive.
  • Bring garden statues of toadstools, gnomes, and woodland creatures into the party space.

Crafts and Games

One idea for an enchanted forest party is to build the party around a magical quest, such as a scavenger hunt for mystical items. A magic potion quest, for instance, sends kids on a hunt for the ingredients they will use to make their very own bottle of potion.

Another magical quest idea is to send them on a hunt for magic rocks. Once they have collected the rocks, kids may paint them and, once dry, place them in a small drawstring pouch to take home as a party favor.

A variety of colored beads purchased from a craft store may also be sought and used to create magic crystal bracelets or necklaces.

Other games and activities for an enchanted forest party include:

  • Fairy dust bottle craft
  • Magic wand craft
  • Musical toadstools—tape large cutout shapes of toadstools to the seats of the chairs to play musical chairs
  • Fairy freeze tag—like traditional freeze tag, but the person who is “it” tags players with a fairy wand

Food

Those magical quests sure can build up an appetite! Enchant guests with these mystical menu items:

  • Magic potion beverages (make ice cubes from different colors of juice and add them to a clear punch to watch the liquid magically change colors as the ice cubes melt!)
  • Fairy tea sandwiches shaped with a butterfly cookie cutter
  •  Stuffed mushroom caps or English muffin pizzas
  • Elf-shaped ​decorative cookies
  • Toadstool cupcakes made by overfilling cupcake liners with cake batter so the tops “mushroom” when baking. Decorate them with red icing and mini white marshmallows.
